This was to determine how much could be raised with a series of fundraising events in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Haiti, and Curacao.
A number of national and community-based campaigns have been launched to try and raise at least $300 million a year, on average, to meet the Millennium Development Goal target of reducing the rate of child mortality to under the current figure of 67 per thousand by 2015.
Two of the partners in the Caribbean-SIDS partnership are the All Islands Foundation (AIF) and the United Kingdom Child Development Initiative (UKCDI). AIF has been working with the Save the Children global network for many years, and UKCDI is linked to the Viva Charity through the Prince’s Trust.
AIF co-director, Dr. Jennifer Moore, told the paper that the estimated US$300 million, which was announced last year, was a great start, but it would take more than that to ensure the Millennium Development Goal is achieved.
“When you look at all the events we have been doing over the past few years, we have done a good job. The numbers are going down, but there is a lot of work to be done,” Moore said.
